Taiwan purchases missiles for air defense system
Taiwan’s military representative office in the US has finalized a US$761.55 million (NT$24.98 billion) missile procurement deal with the American Institute in Taiwan for its upcoming National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), according to the Government Electronic Procurement Network.
The contract, which will be overseen by the Air Force Command Headquarters, runs from Jan. 14, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2030, per CNA.
In January, Taiwan’s Government Electronic Procurement Network announced three major defense procurement contracts with the US, covering air defense missiles, L-band mobile radars, and non-L-band mobile radar systems. These contracts total more than NT$24.3 billion and are set for completion by 2034. The military confirmed that these deals are related to the NASAMS acquisition.
The US approved Taiwan’s request to purchase three NASAMS units in October, including 123 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles-Extended Range (AMRAAM-ER) and other related equipment, as part of a US$1.16 billion package.
The NASAMS air defense systems will be deployed in the Greater Taipei area to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses against aerial threats.
