The US approves a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Romania of 400 GBU-39B Small Diameter Bombs
The U.S. Department of State has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Romania of GBU-39B Small Diameter Bombs.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced this.
The total value of a possible sale of small-diameter bombs and related equipment is estimated at $84 million.
In addition to the bombs, a possible Foreign Military Sale includes technical assistance, training aids, publications and technical data, and other related logistical and software items.
This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally.
This proposed sale will also improve Romania’s capability to meet current and future threats by increasing its ability to deter and defend against all threats and to participate in NATO coalition air operations.
GBU-39
GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) is an American light high-precision aircraft bomb that weighs 130 kilograms and has a diameter of about 190 mm and a length of about 1.8 m. The maximum range is up to 110 km, provided that it is dropped from a high altitude.
The bomb’s wings are released in flight, significantly increasing its range.
When diving at a target from a high altitude, the tungsten tip can penetrate concrete shelters.
The accuracy of the hit is achieved with the help of an on-board control system with an inertial system and GPS.
Radar
The United States previously approved the sale of four Sentinel AN/MPQ-64 F1 air surveillance radar systems to Romania.
Their total cost is approximately $90 million, with the first two systems being funded by grants from the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Military Financing Fund.
