The Ukrainian military has showcased the Leopard 1A5 tanks, which were handed over as part of defense assistance from partner countries.

The tanks are ready to destroy Russian invaders in the Donetsk region, ArmyInform reports.

The photos of these tanks in the ranks of the Ukrainian army and their combat training were published.

The first Leopard 1A5 tanks were delivered to Ukraine in July this year as part of a military aid package from Germany. They are equipped with a 105-mm rifled gun that allows them to hit targets with great accuracy.

The Leopard 1A5 tank crew consists of four servicemen, unlike Soviet-type tanks, which are operated by three soldiers.

“When we first arrived at the training, it was quite strange and unusual for us to learn that in addition to the tank commander, gunner and driver, there was also a tank loader. Later, we realized that this is a pretty cool moment, because even at a critical moment, the fourth crew member is always available to help, and in the realities of modern warfare, this is very important,” said tank platoon leader Vitalii.

The tank loader spoke about his work as a member of the Leopard 1A5 crew.

“My job is to quickly load the tank round, select the type of ammunition, turn on the hydraulics, unblock the turret and give permission to fire. In addition, I have to keep an eye on the barrels, lubricate them and change them periodically after a certain number of shots. I also maintain the M73 machine gun, which can be mounted near the tank commander’s seat,” says soldier Serhii.

Tank gunner Oleksii noted that training on these tanks was not difficult.

“Before I start my work, I have to check the oil level and check the entire system to make sure it is in good working order. In fact, it all takes no more than three minutes and the tank is actually ready for combat. I have a main sight and an additional one. The latter works as an emergency sight, therefore when there is no power supply and then you can shoot mechanically. I use the main sight to measure the range and select the type of projectile,” the soldier said.

Who transfers the tanks

Back in February of this year, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands announced that they would provide Ukraine with Leopard 1 tanks to help counter the Russian invasion. In total, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are to receive more than 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks repaired in Germany.
