The US Army has awarded Swedish defense firm Saab an approximately $46-million contract for an undisclosed number of Giraffe 1X radars.
The deal was made “in support of security co-operation partners,” with deliveries of the combat-proven systems scheduled to begin in 2026.
“Saab’s Giraffe 1X radars bring the US Army a combat-proven capability that can be rapidly deployed to meet the growing spectrum of global threats, including unmanned aerial systems,” said Erik Smith, head of Saab US.
Giraffe 1X
Saab’s Giraffe 1X is a compact and lightweight 3D radar weighing less than 150 kilograms (330 pounds), making it suitable for rapid deployment.
It can be vehicle-mounted, shipborne, or fixed.
Offering continuous, real-time air surveillance, the radar can detect incoming missiles and hostile drones at extended ranges and supports target data sharing with command-and-control systems.
“Giraffe 1X equips the US and its security co-operation partners with a decisive operational advantage, ensuring they can stay ahead of emerging challenges,” Smith added.
Other countries that have procured or operated the Giraffe 1X include Latvia, Sweden, and the UK.
