China shows its latest SLC-18 radar that can detect spy satellites

 China has put on the market its latest SLC-18 radar capable of detecting and tracking spy satellites. The giant space monitoring radar has been displayed at this year’s Airshow China.

Sun Lei, a project manager at China Electronics Technology Group Corp’s 14th Institute, which developed the radar, said that spy satellites in low orbit are characterized by strong reconnaissance capabilities, low detectability and orbital maneuverability. Specific information about these satellites is needed for the military to plan for avoidance, camouflage, jamming or other countermeasures,” he said.

Sun Lei told the Global Times that in order to avoid other countries’ satellites, the military must maneuver intentionally when moving sensitive equipment or deploying on the ground or take countermeasures for interference with satellite signals.  That is why the information when a satellite is in transit is essential.

The SLC-18 developers claim their radar is able to forecast flybys by spy satellites, allowing for enough time for decision-making and countermeasures. The movable radar can scan a wide field of space and can work in all weather conditions and environments.
