Lockheed’s Extended-Range HIMARS Round Step Closer to Production

Lockheed Martin has wrapped up the first systems qualification flight test of its Extended-Range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (ER GMLRS), pushing it closer to production.

During a short-range test flight, the M142 HIMARS-fired round flew 59 kilometers (37 kilometers) to a target area at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

The munition cleared four engineering development test flights before being put through the short-range tests.

The missile will go through operational test flights in the next round of tests, followed by the production contract award expected in 2023.

Range of Over 150 Kilometers

The under-development extended-range munition is expected to have a maximum range exceeding 150 kilometers (93 miles), more than twice that of the GMLRS. The US Army test fired the round at a distance of over 135 kilometers (84 miles) last year.

“Our next-generation GMLRS provides versatility for commanders, offering a choice of munitions at longer distances with the same reliability and precision the system is known for,” said Vice President of Precision Fires at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Jay Price.

“This success advances the ER GMLRS closer to production as we complete the final phase of the development program.”
