BAE Debuts UK’s First Homegrown Collaborative Combat Aircraft
The Brontanax collaborative combat aircraft supports precision strikes and electronic warfare alongside crewed fighters.
The UK’s first collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) developed on home soil has stepped into the spotlight.
At the Farnborough International Airshow, BAE Systems showcased a prototype of the Brontanax aircraft, built to deliver precision strikes and electronic warfare against both aerial and ground targets.
It is envisioned to fly alongside crewed combat platforms such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, acting as a force multiplier that extends their reach and combat mass.
A nearby pilot or mission commander can control Brontanax, enabling seamless teaming between crewed and uncrewed aircraft.
According to BAE Systems, the CCA features an open architecture and modular design that allow it to evolve with emerging threats and future mission requirements throughout its service life.
“Our [CCA] will provide the ability to extend the reach of crewed aircraft, generating greater combat mass at lower cost, while keeping pilots out of harm’s way,” said Simon Barnes, group managing director at BAE Systems Air sector.
“This capability represents a significant company investment in the UK’s future of air power and builds on our long-standing commitment to innovation.”
A Self-Funded Initiative
Brontanax is the latest product of BAE Systems’ FalconWorks advanced projects team, building on more than two decades of experience in uncrewed and autonomous systems.
The aircraft has been entirely self-funded throughout its research and development phase.
BAE said it is now preparing for ground testing ahead of flight demonstrations in British airspace.
Barnes added that the project is expected to strengthen the UK’s sovereign defense industrial base by creating opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, suppliers, and industry partners across the country.
