Japan Puts AI at the Center of Record $55.6B Defense Push

Tokyo is accelerating military modernization with AI-driven decision-making, unmanned attack platforms, and expanded strike capabilities as regional tensions grow.

Japan is seeking a record 8.9-trillion-yen ($55.6-billion) defense budget for fiscal 2027, with artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and long-range weapons at the center of its military buildup.

The Ministry of Defense plans to bring AI directly into command and control through an integrated platform designed to speed up battlefield assessments, target selection, and other military decisions.

At the heart of the effort could be an “AI orchestrator” capable of coordinating multiple AI systems, combining US-developed technologies with Japan’s own models, according to the Associated Press.

Beyond the command room, Tokyo plans to acquire low-cost attack drones that can operate alongside its growing arsenal of long-range missiles.

The ministry is seeking funding for aerial and underwater attack drones, while also pursuing submarine-launched hypersonic missiles to expand Japan’s long-range strike options.

The buildup reflects lessons from recent conflicts, particularly the growing role of next-gen technologies in Ukraine.

China’s growing military pressure remains a major driver of the spending push, which also seeks to strengthen domestic weapons production and reduce the risk of supply disruptions.
