Lockheed Martin flight tested the extended-range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (ER GMLRS) to its maximum range of 150 kilometers (93 miles).

The missile flew twice the range of the operational GMLRS, achieving success criteria for flight trajectory, extended range, and accuracy from launch to impact.

It also demonstrated successful integration with the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

It’s a major step up from last year’s short-range test flight where the missile clocked 59 kilometers (37 kilometers).

ER Variant Features

Lockheed has been testing the ER variant since 2018.

It features a new motor and improved design to enable the extended range, according to The War Zone.

The missile’s fins are moved from the nose to the tail for streamlined aerodynamics.

A new GPS/INS guidance package has been added to the missile to address relocation, the outlet added.

“This test demonstrates nearly double the range while maintaining the precision GMLRS is known for,” Lockheed Martin vice president of Precision Fires Jay Price said.

“Lockheed Martin is committed to advancing this critical capability on a rapid timeline for our Army customer, and this test moves ER GMLRS one step closer to fielding.”
