The Taiwanese Army has inaugurated its own drone training center, reinforcing its commitment to adapting to modern warfare.

Located in the southern city of Tainan, the center will provide basic training in drone operations and familiarize personnel with development and maintenance processes.

Taiwan’s Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo graced the facility’s inauguration last Friday, witnessing a brief exercise involving reconnaissance and combat drones.

Hsiao praised the dedication and hard work of the personnel running the new facility and expressed gratitude to their families for their unwavering support.

According to local media outlets, the launch of the drone training center signals the army’s recognition of evolving warfare trends and its proactive efforts to adapt to them.

Developing Asymmetrical Combat Capabilities

The center’s inauguration symbolizes the army’s progress in developing asymmetrical combat capabilities in response to growing threats from China.

Beijing views the island nation as its renegade province and has threatened to use force, if necessary, to reunite it with the mainland.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who only took office in May 2024, has directed the military to stay at the forefront of emerging technologies, such as drones and artificial intelligence.

In line with this vision, the Taiwanese military has increased investments in unmanned aerial technologies. In November 2024, it signed a formal agreement with the US for the purchase of nearly 1,000 attack drones.

Additionally, the Navy has ordered explosive drones from the state-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology to enhance its aerial strike capabilities.
