The US State Department has approved Finland’s request to upgrade its M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS).

The potential $395-million purchase will upgrade Helsinki’s M270A1 MLRSs to the latest M270A2 version.

The upgrade includes “intercom systems, radio communication mounts, machine gun mounts, a battle management system vehicle integration kit, publications for MLRS, spares, services, support equipment, and program and logistics support,” the Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated.

M270A2 Upgrades

Finland has 40 M270A1s, including 12 for driver training.

The upgrade will allow the Lockheed Martin system to fire the Precision Strike Missile, which has a range of over 310 miles (500 kilometers).

Other upgrades include better cabin armor protection and a more powerful 600-hp engine.

Recent Purchases

Bordering Russia on its east, the NATO country has been bolstering its defense preparedness of late, purchasing armored personnel carriers and anti-tank missiles.

This week, the US approved the sale of the David’s Sling air defense system to the Northern European country, making it the first foreign customer of the long-range Israeli air defense system.
