VTOL Autonomous Fighter: Shield AI Unveils X-BAT Prototype

US defence company Shield AI has unveiled a full-scale prototype of its X-BAT 001 jet-powered autonomous fighter with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability.

The manufacturer announced this.

The presented aircraft is the first of two full-scale prototypes that Shield AI plans to build for testing.

According to TWZ, unlike previously unveiled mock-ups and computer-generated models, the X-BAT 001 is equipped with a fully functional propulsion arrangement and the systems required to begin ground and flight testing.

The prototype’s design largely matches the updated mock-up displayed at the Sea-Air-Space exhibition in April 2026.

However, it features several differences, including a modified thrust-vectoring exhaust nozzle configuration. On the new prototype, the nozzle protrudes noticeably beyond the wing’s trailing edge, whereas in previous images it was partially recessed into the fuselage.

In addition, two raised structures with air intakes and additional circular openings covered with mesh have appeared on the upper surface of the fuselage. Their purpose is currently unknown, but they may be related to the operation of the propulsion arrangement.

Shield AI representatives noted that the X-BAT 001 is an experimental aircraft, so its design will continue to evolve during testing.

X-BAT

The X-BAT is a promising jet-powered autonomous fighter designed to perform combat missions without the need for conventional runways.

The aircraft is being developed based on a tail-sitter configuration, which allows it to take off and land vertically while resting on its tail. After take-off, the UAV transitions to horizontal flight.

In July 2026, Shield AI and GE Aerospace announced the successful integration of the nozzle with the engine and the conduction of the first ground tests of the propulsion system.

According to the stated specifications, the X-BAT will have a range of more than 3,700 km, a service ceiling of over 15 km and the ability to manoeuvre at load factor of over 4g.

The UAV is designed to carry air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, which can be housed in internal weapons bays. It can also be fitted with additional weapons on external hardpoints.

One of the X-BAT’s key features will be its ability to operate from mobile ground platforms, ships and small sites, allowing it to be deployed without prepared airfield infrastructure.

In October, Shield AI also signed an agreement with Greek holding GEK TERNA to establish an industrial base, maintenance facilities and training centres in Greece for the prospective X-BAT UAVs.

The development is being funded with support from the U.S. Navy under the Runway Independent Maritime Expeditionary Strike (RIMES) programme, which aims to develop long-range strike aircraft systems that do not depend on airfields. According to an official Shield AI announcement, total government and private funding for the X-BAT development has reached $400 million.

The prototype’s first flight tests are scheduled for the end of 2026. A fully operational combat version is expected in 2028, with serial production set to begin in 2029.
