The USA wants to supply Ukraine with an advanced Norwegian-developed anti-aircraft missile system, a source with knowledge of the decision told the news agency AP.
According to the source, the system in question is the Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), developed by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace and produced in collaboration with the American company Raytheon.
NASAMS is used, among other things, by the United States to protect the airspace around the White House and the Congress in Washington.
According to the AP’s source, President Joe Biden will announce the decision at the G7 summit in Elmau, Germany.
NASAMS is a mobile air defense system for medium-range missiles, connected to radars and a control vehicle.
When airborne threats are detected, one or more AMRAAM rockets are automatically fired from a launch pad at the target.
The system is considered very advanced and could be important in Ukraine’s defense against Russian air strikes.
The AMRAAM rockets were developed by Raytheon and can be used both as ground-to-air missiles in the NASAMS air defense system and as air-to-air missiles from aircraft.
